YPN CPD Lecture Series ‘Things They Don’t Teach You in Planning School’ – Lesson 2, January 24th 2013

The IPI Young Planners Network would like to invite you to the second lecture in our Continuous Professional Development series for students and graduates entering planning practice: ‘Things They Don’t Teach You in Planning School’. Given the pace of change in planning legislation and statutory guidance, many young planners experience difficulties when faced with a planning file for the first time. The purpose of the series is to expose young planners to key technical skills critical to practice in both the public and private sectors. While the series has been designed in response to comments received from recent graduates entering the work force, any planner wishing to brush up on essential skills and current practice is welcome to attend.

The next lecture will take place at 6.30 pm on Thursday, 24th January 2013 in Room 333, Dublin Institute of Technology, Dublin 1. A Corporate Plan consultation workshop will take place before the lecture at 5pm in Room 333. This is a free event and all are welcome. Places are strictly limited and will be reserved on a strictly first come, first served basis. RSVP a.s.a.p. to ypn@ipi.ie. We look forward to seeing you there!

Lesson 2 in the series is to be given by Philip Jones FIPI, Assistant Director of Planning in An Bord Pleanála and former president of the IPI. He will give an overview of what it is like to work for an appellate body like An Bord Pleanála. He will discuss what the role of a planning inspector entails and how this role differs from that of a local authority planner.

  1. I have been involved in various forms of youth/community education as discussed, including two particularly enjoyable projects. One involved conducting a photographic scavenger hunt with young people in Vancouver, BC and the other was teaching basic planning to middle school kids as part of the National Engineers Week, Future City Competition in Oak Harbor, Washington.
